Planning to get married? Don’t forget that preparation should not only focus on the wedding day, but should also include the practical aspects of a married life. Where should you live, how you will manage your joint finances and when you should have kids are just some of the things you need to discuss with your future husband.

If you had both decided to buy a home, here are some reminders you need to keep tabs on.

1. Don’t make a purchase that is beyond your means. The high rates of foreclosure should give you some warning that buying a house is no picnic. You need to make sure that you will be able to pay for the mortgage and you won’t end up just losing your home in foreclosure. One option you might want to explore is purchasing a foreclosed property. Foreclosed homes are offered at very low prices and most are in good condition.

2. Choose an appropriate location. If you plan on having kids, make sure that you live in an area with good schools nearby. It should also be a place where you and your husband can get to work without having to spend half the day commuting.

3. Safety first. The best community for you to live in is a neighborhood where majority of residents are families. Avoid selecting a home where nearby houses are mostly empty. They could be cheaper, but they would be less safe.

4. Maintain a good credit score. This can help in getting a good mortgage deal and will affect your general finances.
